Keywords: incremental,backup
As we know there are a lot of backup method to protect our data today, for instance, Full Backup, Daily backup, Differential backup, Incremental backup, Network Backup, Dump Backup, etc. You can choose any approach for each of your projects according to their size and frequency of file modifications, although each backup method has its pros or cons. Here I’d like to give you a brief introduction about incremental backup.
Incremental backup is one of the two most common backup types, the other being full backup. The main difference between full and incremental backup is that incremental backup copies only new and changed files of the selected data array, while full backup does not differentiate backup files and copies all information in full. That means an incremental backup is a backup method where multiple backups are kept (not just the last one). It provides a faster method of backing up data than repeatedly running full backups. These backups will be incremental if each original piece of backed up information is stored only once, and then successive backups only contain the information that changed since a previous backup. That is where it gets its name: each backup is an increment since the most recent backup.
To sum up:
The Advantages of Incremental backup:
Uses the lease time and space as only those files changed since the last backup are copied; lets you back up multiple versions of the same file.
The Disadvantages of Incremental backup:
Makes the job of restoring files fiddly, as you have to reinstall the last full backup first, then all subsequent incremental backups in the correct order; also makes it hard to locate a particular file in the backup set.
The choice between full and incremental backup usually depends on how large is the selected data array. If it is too large, incremental backup is normally preferred as it backs up new and modified files only.
Because incremental backup is smaller it requires less storage space and takes less time to perform. However, incremental backup alone cannot guarantee that all the information thus copied will be recoverable. The data recovery will also require retrieving full backup, so full backup is normally used alongside incremental backup.
However, data loss happens frequently and it is luck that you have had a previous backup before and what about if there is not a backup? At this moment, data recovery software or handy recovery might be a good choice.
